Dutch Oven Deep Dish Pizza!

I inherited some really awesome and well seasoned cast iron skillets from my Mom! Really she just gave them to me cause she doesn’t use them anymore…but because of their age I called them my inheritance!

When I was growing up that is all I remember her ever using was cast iron. She fried chicken and pork chops in them….made a roast and stew in them…she even simmered her sauce in them for spaghetti or goulash.

This little beauty is a Dutch oven type skillet…with a lid and wire handle.  You can tell by just looking at it that it is old…which in turns means well seasoned.

I decided I was going to try and create something using this one while camping this summer. Hopefully you will see more posts…but my first attempt was to do a deep dish pizza!

Here is my ingredients:

  • 1 refrigerated pizza crust
  • 1 small can of pizza sauce
  • 1 small can of diced red and green peppers (found by the pizza sauce)
  • sliced mushrooms
  • peperoni
  • shredded cheese ( I used a pizza blend)
  • crisco

Here is what I did:

Dutch Oven Pizza 1

First I slathered the inside of my pot with Crisco, to prevent the dough from sticking. Then I put in the dough. This wasn’t very pretty…I just used my fingers to spread it around as evenly as I could.

Then I added the sauce and a layer of pepperoni.

Mushrooms next…

Then the peppers…

Topped that with shredded cheese…

Then I added another layer of pepperoni for good measure…and my husband love it!

I covered it and put it on top of the grill over the open fire and let it bake. This probably took about 30 minutes…just like a regular oven…

Yummy Deep Dish Pizza

When the edges were visibly golden I removed it from the grill and pulled out the pizza!

Doesn’t that look just great?? It was about 2″ thick and filled with all those yummy fillings! It was definitely a success!!

I would love to hear about your Dutch Oven Recipes, I’d love for you to share with me!

  1. I used my moms when we camped this summer . I loved making cinnamon rolls . The trick is either sitting the oven on coals about 14/17 then coals on top it creates and oven . If u have around top like mine filp it over . No that being said my next camping trip I just put them on my grill that I put up high so they don’t burn from being to close to the fire . It’s a learning curve but I do love using it . Google how many coals for Dutch oven and you’ll get the ratio of coals for top and bottom for oven temps . Remember wait till the coals ar White or close to it before moving them .

  2. Hi 🙂 what size is your Dutch oven please? I have a 12″ deep, and wonder if yours is shallow, and that’s how you got so nicely brown and done on top?

    • I’m so sorry it didn’t work for you!! My crust was brown but not burnt!! Maybe it was too close to the fire 🙁 Bummer!! But thanks for letting me know!!

  3. This looks wonderful! We cook in dutch ovens all summer when it’s too hot to cook inside. Pizza are a wonderful treat, and yours looks delightful!

I would love to hear from you!
