I inherited some really awesome and well seasoned cast iron skillets from my Mom! Really she just gave them to me cause she doesn’t use them anymore…but because of their age I called them my inheritance!
When I was growing up that is all I remember her ever using was cast iron. She fried chicken and pork chops in them….made a roast and stew in them…she even simmered her sauce in them for spaghetti or goulash.
This little beauty is a Dutch oven type skillet…with a lid and wire handle. You can tell by just looking at it that it is old…which in turns means well seasoned.
I decided I was going to try and create something using this one while camping this summer. Hopefully you will see more posts…but my first attempt was to do a deep dish pizza!
Here is my ingredients:
- 1 refrigerated pizza crust
- 1 small can of pizza sauce
- 1 small can of diced red and green peppers (found by the pizza sauce)
- sliced mushrooms
- shredded cheese ( I used a pizza blend)
Here is what I did:
First I slathered the inside of my pot with Crisco, to prevent the dough from sticking. Then I put in the dough. This wasn’t very pretty…I just used my fingers to spread it around as evenly as I could.
Then I added the sauce and a layer of pepperoni.
Then the peppers…
Topped that with shredded cheese…
Then I added another layer of pepperoni for good measure…and my husband love it!
I covered it and put it on top of the grill over the open fire and let it bake. This probably took about 30 minutes…just like a regular oven…
When the edges were visibly golden I removed it from the grill and pulled out the pizza!
Doesn’t that look just great?? It was about 2″ thick and filled with all those yummy fillings! It was definitely a success!!
I would love to hear about your Dutch Oven Recipes, I’d love for you to share with me!
